We're In New York City!

We left the Cracker Barrel shortly after 9:00am this morning, and arrived at the Marina RV Park at about 10:30am. No one was on duty, so we parked the Bus at the entrance and did a walk through. It is not a very big park, and it is little more than an asphalt parking lot with gravel RV sites. Each site has 50amp electric and water, and there is a dump station available. However, it is right in the middle of New York City as advertised, and it was very easy to get here. It also appears that public transportation service to NYC is going to be very convenient.

A little while after we arrived, a security guard told us to pick a site and get set up. We picked a very nice site, and got the Bus hooked up. We then took the Honda and drove into NYC. That was a real adventure!!! A lot of people and a lot of traffic......... even on a Sunday. We did manage to get parked and walked around Battery Park. We even ate a hot dog off a cart in the park. Then we went to the trendy South Street Seaport shopping area. We got good views of the bridges across the river to Brooklyn as well as the river view of Brooklyn. At both places, we saw a number of street performers.

We then drove around the city. We managed to find Chinatown, Little Italy, SOHO, Wall Street & the financial district, and we drove down 5th Avenue and Broadway. To get from Jersey City, NJ, where the campground is located to the city, we had to take the Holland Tunnel. It was the longest tunnel that we have ever driven in, and when I got back to the Bus, I looked it up on the Internet. It is 8500 ft long, and was put into service on November 13, 1927. All in all, it gave us a good chance to get a layout of the city, and we are looking forward to tackling the subway system and seeing the city on foot next week.

Here are some pictures, beginning with a shot of the Bus in the site at the campground, and the view of the Statue of Liberty from the campground:

The following are pictures from Battery Park, showing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island..........

Here's a picture of a sculpture that was at the World Trade Center, and although damaged, it was relocated to Battery Park to honor those lost in the buildings destruction:

and here is one of the street performers that we saw at the park............

This is a view of a couple of bridges from NYC to Brooklyn taken from the South Street Seaport.....

When driving in the city, the taxi drivers can get sort of intimidating. Horns are going off constantly, and they are always trying to cut in front of you. It didn't take me long to figure out how the game was played, and I began to drive just as aggressively. It caused Patsy to start laughing saying that it was a good thing that Manuel or Mark weren't sitting in the front seat or the floorboard would be dented from them putting on "imaginary" brakes...........

and the last picture for the day is for my favorite 'commissioned' artist, Sue Didelot. It was a mural on the wall of a building, and the painter is part of the painting...........

Tomorrow, we tackle the subway system!!!!!
