Oklahoma to Little Rock

On Thursday morning, we left the Talimena State Park campground and headed 3 miles up the road to the Talimena Scenic Byway.  We were the only campers in the campground, so it was quiet!!  Here are a couple of pictures………….

Before getting on the byway, we stopped at the visitor center and picked up some maps and information. The route was 40 miles long, and it took us about two hours to complete it.  During the first 35 miles, we did not see another vehicle on the road………… in either direction!  If fact, the one car we saw in a pull-out was the only vehicle on the entire route.  Here are some pictures……….

It was a pleasant drive with plenty of hills and curves to make it fun, and nice scenery to boot!!

We drove on through Hot Springs and into Little Rock.  Deanne, Mike and Rachel brought some pizza over to the Bus, and we ate.  It was nice seeing Rachel again….. yeah, and also her parents!!  Some more pictures……

She liked the stuffed dog that Patsy has on the dash, and then we put some cartoons on the TV in the bedroom.  She crawled right up on the bed and made herself at home!

On this trip, we hauled some toys from Aubrey, our 7 year old granddaughter in Texas to Rachel.   The main thing was a little kitchen.  We delivered it to the house on Friday morning, and she took off playing with it.  Some more pictures……….

It is now Saturday morning, and we are baby sitting while Deanne and Mike are at their new house doing some painting.  On Sunday morning, we will be leaving Little Rock and heading back toward Hot Springs for the TRVN rally.  We will be there for a week.

Travel to Hot Springs, AR for TRVN Rally

or non-Tiffin motorhome owners, there exists a forum on the internet for Tiffin motorhome owners which is managed by the owners.  The Tiffin company has no connection to it.  It provides owners with an opportunity to exchange a lot of information on the Tiffin brand rigs, and a lot is it is very valuable to other owners.

Frequently, they have rallies around the country.  On Oct 3—7, they are having one at Catherine’s Landing campground in Hot Springs.

Since we haven’t been traveling in a while, I looked and found a scenic route to get from home to the Hot Springs area.  We decided to travel north to Oklahoma to the eastern part of the state where there are some mountains.  We will take the Talimena National Scenic Byway

Our plan is to arrive in Little Rock on Thursday (with reservations at the North Little Rock RV Park) where we will stay until Sunday morning.  We will be baby sitting our third grandchild, Rachel, while her parents will be painting and doing other stuff on a new house that they are having built.  Sunday morning we will check into the Hot Springs RV park for the rally, where we will stay until the next Sunday.  After that, we may do some more baby sitting, or we may head home…… not sure!!

We left Victoria on Tuesday, and drove to Mt Pleasant, TX where we overnighted in a Wal-Mart parking lot.  We left this morning about 9:00am, and drove through some scenic and mountainous countryside.

About 50 miles from the scenic byway entrance, on a very remote highway, we heard a muffled “boom” and my tire monitor went ballistic. When I had time to look at the monitor, I found that the passenger side outer dual tire had blown out.  The very remote road that we were driving on had a very narrow shoulder….. about 18”.  I limped at 10mph for about 2 miles, and was finally able to pull over into a gravel pasture entrance.   I got out to check the damage, expecting to see the wheel well fiberglass shattered, but there was no damage other than the blown tire.

I went back inside the Bus, and called the roadside assistance that we subscribe to, and got the started on finding us a mobile tire service with a used tire of the correct size.

While they were doing that, we drove at 10mph to find a better place to pull over.  We made it to the little town of Snow, OK, which had a post office and a “community center” about the size of a double-wide trailer.  That was the whole town, but we were able to pull into the parking lot shared by both facilities without being in anybody’s way.

About the time we stopped, the road service called back and had two choices……… One was a new tire for $700 and a 2 hour wait and the other was a $100 used tire and a 30 minute wait.  I chose the latter, because the new tire was not the same as what we have on the Bus.

Here are some pictures:

The tire being changed out…….

The blowout happened at about 11:30am, and we were on our way at about 3:30pm.  This included two tire changes, because the first tire that the guy brought out had a big hole in it.  At least when he came back, the tire he brought was much better than the first one, and a very good used tire.  I think he felt bad!!

We decided to not take the scenic byway (about 56 miles of mountainous and curvy road) today, and to wait until tomorrow morning.  We drove to the Talimena State Park, which is located about 3 miles from the scenic byway, and got a campsite for the night.  They only have about 12 sites, but we are the only ones here.  It is very remote, and very quiet!!  I forgot to get pictures before the sun went down, but will post them tomorrow.

Until then…………

The Rest of our Summer-Time Travels

After returning from the Disneyworld trip, we only went out in the Bus two times………… Once in late July to take the Grandkids out for an End-of-Summer trip, and a rally over Labor Day weekend with the Camping Friends camp club in La Grange, TX at the Colorado Landings campground

We took the kids to both Lockhart and Bastrop state parks.  We camped for two days at Lockhart, and then spent the day at Bastrop on the way home.  Both parks had very nice swimming pools, and the kids had a really good time.  We were there in the middle of the week, and the pools were not at all crowded.  We only took videos of them swimming, so I don’t have any pictures.

I did take a picture of them making their “goofy” faces at Kruez Market in Lockhart who have the best sausage that I have ever eaten!

Another event on this trip, was a flat on the rear PS outer dual tire.  I think that I either ran over something in the restaurant parking lot, or hit a curb, because it failed soon after we left the lot.  It cost a several hours on the side of the road, and a couple of hundred dollars for a used tire, since the sidewall blew out, and the tire was ruined.

The weekend with the Camping Friends was very nice and relaxing.  We got to spend time with friends that we had not seen in over a year, and I entered into a Texas Hold-em tournament and won!

My buddy, Mark Didelot, also helped me change out the awning on my DS rear slide topper that had ripped.  It took us a couple of hours, but we got it done.  Now I owe him a Chocolate malt at Dairy Queen!!  He works for food.

This blog wraps up a very slow summer of minimum travel!!

Blogging and Traveling Again!!

We had to put my mother into a nursing facility here in our hometown, and in the last several months, she really has not had a lot of really good days!  That has kept our travel days at a minimum.

We did take a long-planned trip to Disneyworld at the beginning of the summer with our Son, Daughter-in-Law, and two grandkids.  I never really finished that travel blog.

Once we left Orlando, Rick and Laura drove back to Texas to go to work, and the grandkids chose to travel home with us in the Bus.  We took our time, and drove up to the Daytona Beach and St. Augustine areas, but the persistent rains kept us from being able to stop and enjoy them.  We continued north to the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia.  We took a boat ride into the swamp to see the alligators up close and personal with the gators as well as the swamp.  Matthew likes to watch the Gator show on the Discovery Channel, and he enjoyed seeing alligators from the boat.  Here are some pictures……….

As can be seen, Aubrey enjoyed shopping as much as the boat ride.  At least she found an appropriate shirt!!!

Our next stop was Red Bay, AL, where we had a new windshield put in the Bus.   It took a large rock in Texas.  We found a water park and a nice playground for them in Red Bay.

Next, it was on to Little Rock, AR, with a stop at the Memphis Zoo.  We had a good one-day visit at the zoo.
