Camping with the Gulf Coast RV Club

I am a little late on updating this site.

We belong to two camping groups in South Texas. The Gulf Coast RV Club (http://gulfcoastrvclub.org/) and the South Texas Boomers (http://irv2.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=frm&s=8076099152&f=6736094452). On May 4--6, we met with the first group at the Gulf Coast RV Park in Beaumont Texas. We left Victoria a little early and drove down to Galveston, crossed the ferry, and went up toward Beaumont via the coast highway.

Here we are on the ferry:

The ride was about 15 minutes to cross, which was longer than we expected, but it was a pleasant surprise. We spent the night in a campground in Crystal Beach, TX, and did a lot of driving in the CRV on the beach. Texas State highway 87 has been closed between High Island and Port Arthur for several years. We decided to see how far we could drive on the 'closed' section, considering the CRV is 4-wheel drive. I did not expect to find an asphalt road, but I did expect to get fairly far. We only made it about 4 miles before the road (beach) was impassable. Here's what it looked like:

We arrived at the Gulf Coast RV park early on Friday, and found a lot of the folks already there. We were parked between Mayfield and Jackie Harris (founder of the club), and Mark and Sue Didelot. The Didelots have a 5th wheel, and are planning to begin to travel 'a lotta time' like we do. They are going to semi-retire, and take long trips, but keep a regular home base. They have expressed a strong interest in going with us next January to Quartzsite and then on into Mexico.... hopefully Baja!! Obviously, they have not met the kind of people that we meet up with in Quartzsite!!!!! Mark and Sue had plans to leave this campout and head to Bowling Green, KY to attend the LOW conference. I heard from him, and he got to meet Nick and Terry Russell of the 'Gypsy Journal' and got a tour of their Bus.

Here is a picture of some of the group under the front of the Didelot's 5th wheel:

Mark is the guy in the white baseball cap, and Sue is sitting to the far left. Here are some additional photos at the evening meal in the club house:

In the first photo, Patsy is in the lower right, and in the second, Mark is in the lower left.

Patsy and I packed up on Sunday morning and headed home. Since then, we have been working on the motorhome and the house to get ready for a 3 week trip that we will start at the end of May.

More later!
