On Wednesday, we checked into the Shipshewana campground and went to the Flea Market in Shipshewana. It was interesting, but we did not buy very much.
After we had some lunch, we drove to the RV/MH Hall of Fame Museum in Elkhart. I had heard about it, but did not expect much. The entry fee for seniors was $6/person, and it turned out to be a bargain. The displays were mainly camper trailers from the 50’s to the 70’s, but it was neat. Here’s a picture of the front of the building and the fountain out front. Note the truck on the toll way triple-towing, we saw a lot of this in Indiana…..
Here are some of the displays…..
A dollhouse and old car with a lawnmower engine that a campground owner built for his daughter, who used to drive it around the campground…..
A really old camper in great shape………..
An RV made on a Cadillac frame, that would fit in the standard home garage. Only two were made!!
The first ‘slide-out’ camper! The drawers on the back (side) slide in, and then the whole unit slides into the back of the car. Then, the trunk lid closes up……
They also had a “house car” on display that was used by movie star, May West, when she left the theater to make movies. In the third picture, you can see a ‘back porch’, where she reportedly sat and rocked in a rocking chair………
A view from the floor above………
While we were there, a film crew was filming a show for an RV series on TV. I am not sure exactly what show it was, but maybe somebody will recognize the ‘stars’! Regardless, they said it will air in September……
We also saw a picture of Bob Tiffin, the CEO and sole owner of the manufacturer of our Bus in the Hall of Fame on the second floor…….
In the store, they had copies of Nick Russell’s books on sale….
Tomorrow, we will tour the back roads around Shipshewana.
