My nephew, Michael King, is retiring from a career in the Air Force on June 13, after more than 20 years service, and multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ceremony is going to be in Charleston, SC, so we decided to make it an RV road trip!
With school out, we decided to take the grandkids, Matthew and Aubrey……… then their mother. our DIL, Laura, said “Me Too”!! Our son, Rick, did not have enough vacations days to go with us, so he stayed back, and had a nice ‘vacation’ at home. Our general plan is 2-3 days in Savannah, 5 days in Charleston, and then 3 days at the Alabama State Park in Gulf Shores on the way home.
So the five of us left Victoria last Thursday afternoon, and traveled uneventfully to Slidell, LA and arrived at about midnight. We overnighted at the Slidell Wal-Mart, since the Murphy’s was closed when we arrived.
Friday morning, we fueled up, and hit the interstate again. We traveled through Mississippi and Alabama quickly, and arrived at the Welcome station in Florida about noon. Travel services from Florida, like hotels, resorts, and restaurants were having a ‘vacation fair’ in the welcome center, so we stocked up on candies, beach balls, koozies, and some orange juice. They also got some “pirate booty”……..
Interstate 10 East of Pensacola is not very busy, and my DIL had been bugging us to drive the Bus, so I let her have the wheel in this section. She did OK, but I guess it was one of those “watch what you ask for!” things, and after about 40 miles, with big rigs passing on the left, she said that she had enough!! Here is a picture, and she posted a video on her Facebook page. Disclaimer: Her story may not be identical to mine and may contain certain inaccuracies!!
We traveled about 11 hour s on Friday, and got to a Wal-Mart on the West side of Jacksonville, FL. The kids traveled well, and had a good time staying busy. Here are some pictures……..
……. and Mom was happy being ‘just a passenger’, again!!
On Saturday, we traveled the last three hours and arrived at our campsite in the Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah. Here’s a picture of our site…………
More on our adventures in Savannah in the next blog.
