After that, we drove to the historic part of Bristol. We took pictures of the landmarks….. Racing Mural, Salute to Country Music Mural, the Railroad Station (that was being rebuilt), the statue honoring the Confederacy, and the Bristol sign in the daylight.
The shopping area was mostly antique stores, so while Patsy walked through them, I found free WIFI from a nearby coffee shop (as well as a cinnamon roll and diet coke!). While she was shopping, Patsy had a conversation with a shop owner about the street that ran down the middle of the area…… State St. The center of the street was the boundary line between Virginia and Tennessee. The shop owner told Patsy that Tennessee maintained one half of the street and Virginia the other. He was a little put out that Tennessee, his side, was spending money to fix up the sidewalks with brick and new street lights, and Virginia had not yet approved the money. She also found out that all the drunks run from the Tennessee side to the Virginia side when the cops show up because the penalty is 30 days in jail in Tennessee and 1 day in Virginia. Here is a picture of one of the brass signs in the street noting the boundary.
We finished up about 3:00PM, and headed west to Knoxville. We found a Wal-Mart / Sam’s complex just east of town, and pulled into Wal-Mart for the night. A cool front came through as we were driving and really cooled it down nicely. Tomorrow, we plan to tour downtown Knoxville, and do laundry, if we find a nice Laundromat.
We made a campground reservation in Pigeon Forge for Thursday and Friday night. On Friday afternoon and Saturday, we plan to go to Dollywood.
